Amis Balcomb began teaching drawing and graphic design at Eastside Prep in the fall of 2005. Her art ranges from graphic design to photography. Her philosophy is that Art inspires, and enriches our lives—it transcends languages and prejudices—it opens and expands our minds to the world around us and teaches us to see.

Adrienne Behrmann, BA

Upper School Math
Adrienne Behrmann joined Eastside Prep full time in 2007. She taught for seven years in public and private schools in Cape Town before immigrating to Toronto, Canada in 1990. She obtained an Honours Specialist qualification in Mathematics in Canada, and taught in a Waldorf School and the public school system for seven years. After moving to Bellevue in 2005, she taught for several quarters at BCC before joining Eastside Prep.

Laurie Benaloh, PhD
Middle School Mathematical Thinking
Laurie Benaloh joined Eastside Prep as a math teacher in 2007. Before that, she held faculty positions at Clarkson University and the University of New Haven and has also taught at the high school and elementary school levels. Prior to her teaching career, Dr. Benaloh was a software engineer in a variety of industries.

Doug Blair, J.D.
Upper School Physical Education
Dough Blair teaches PE in both the Middle and Upper Schools at EPS and coaches volleyball and basketball. He previously taught physical education and coached basketball, soccer, track, and ultimate Frisbee at The Northwest School in Seattle. In addition to athletics, Doug has studied law and is a lover of music: he has performed professionally as a vocalist throughout the Seattle area.

Daria Brandt. M.A.
5th Grade
Daria Brandt taught Elementary and Middle School in New York for almost ten years. Born in New York City, Daria spent much of her childhood in Nova Scotia and Palisades, learning to love animals and nature, raising pets, and caring for and training her own horse.

"Each year I watch an adorable new group of fifth graders join our community; uncertain how to navigate the geography of their new middle school yet excited and willing to meet all the challenges they encounter head on. Theron Cross, M.A.
US Physics, Math & Pre-Calculus
Theron Cross joined the Eastside Prep faculty in 2009. Before that, he taught Physics, Urban Farming and Sustainable Design in pre- and post-Katrina New Orleans. His course curricula are designed to provide the skills and knowledge for sustainable innovation. In addition to teaching Upper School Physics and Math, Theron coaches the Middle School Boys Basketball team.

Michael Cruz, MFA
Theater
Michael Cruz joined the Eastside Prep faculty in 2008. With over ten years experience working on the professional stage, Michael has performed with many theaters including Playwright’s Horizon’s (NYC), Mayi Theater (NYC), Old Globe Theater (San Diego), Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and People’s Light and Theatre outside of Philadelphia where he was a member of the resident company. As a teacher and director, he has worked with the Seattle Rep, The Shakespeare Theater (DC), Youth Theatre Northwest, Pacific Crest School, The Northwest School, and the Kimberton Waldorf School in Pennsylvania where he directed and taught for 5 years. Michael lives in Seattle with his partner Jason.

Matt Delaney MiT
Upper School History
Matt Delaney Delaney joined the faculty of Eastside Prep in August of 2007. He spent the previous 7 years teaching History, Political Science, English and Media Studies, and served as a small school facilitator at Edmonds-Woodway H.S. As a competitive swimmer, Matt was a U.S. Senior National qualifier, a pool record holder at Yale University, and a member of the Ivy League Champion Princeton Swimming & Diving Team. He currently competes as a recreational triathlete, open-water swimmer, and cyclist.

Katie Dodd, M.S.
Middle School Science
Katie Dodd joined Eastside Prep in 2009 as a Middle School science teacher. Katie hails originally from New Orleans but has been a Seattle resident since 1997. Prior to teaching she worked as a fisheries biologist, which took her to such exotic locales as the middle of the Bering Sea. Her most recent teaching experience was at Lakeside, teaching biology and advanced biology in the Upper School. She has also worked as a tutor for students at both Lakeside and the Bush School.

Patricia Ferreyra, M.E.E.L.E
Upper School Spanish
Patricia Ferreyra joined the faculty of Eastside Prep in the Fall of 2007. Her ten years’ teaching experience includes both her native Argentina, as well as the US. Patricia is passionate about teaching, traveling and learning about other cultures. Her goal is to help the Spanish language program continue to grow and develop while increasing cultural awareness in her students.

Kelly Fox, MA Hispanic Studies

Upper School Spanish
Kelly Fox joined the Eastside Prep community in 2009. Her background is in experiential education and her prior work experience includes creating an adventure- and service-based program for young adults transitioning out of the foster care system through the YMCA of Greater Seattle, coordinating extracurricular programming for students in the Renton school district, and leading rock climbing outings for youth through Passages Northwest. She has also taught beginner and intermediate Spanish at the University of Washington. Kelly's passion for Spanish language is rooted in a deep commitment to exploring and learning from other cultures around the world. She has spent a year each in Spain and Puerto Rico.

"The Spanish curriculum is so fully integrated into the life of Eastside Prep. There are ways that we can include the language in every corner of the school: in bilingual posters representing the school's 5 Respect Points, in students who raise their hands in science class and ask their question in Spanish, in a school-wide celebration of the Día de los Muertos. It’s a unique set-up for a school and one that I believe enriches the foreign language experience for every student."


Patricia Friel, MBA
Middle School Mathematical Thinking
Patricia Friel has been involved with Eastside Prep since the school's inception, first as a founding board member and then as a volunteer teacher starting in 2007. Before teaching, Patricia had a twelve-year career at Microsoft. Prior to that, she was a radar systems engineer for Lockheed Martin.

Paul Hagen, BA
MS Historical Thinking
Paul Hagen joined Eastside Prep in 2009. A native of the Pacific Northwest, he spent the last two years teaching history at Makua Lani Christian School in Hawaii, where he also acted as the college counselor and the student government faculty advisor. Prior to that he and his wife Teresa taught English in Madrid, Spain. Paul has consistently been committed to service, both locally and globally, and to that end he has taught English in Thailand, worked as a humanitarian in Mexico, served in Washington State Search and Rescue, and coached and mentored numerous young people.

Melissa Hayes, BS

Physical Education
Melissa Hayes joined Eastside Prep in the fall of 2006. She came to the school from coaching at Lakeside School and the Lake Washington Rowing Club. She teaches Middle and Upper School Physical Education at EPS and coaches the growing crew team that she founded her first year here. Melissa is a US Rowing Level II certified coach.

Chuck Henry, PhD
Eastside Prep Impact Center Coordinator
Upper School Physics
Chuck Henry joined the faculty of Eastside Prep in the 2006-2007 academic year. Prior to that, Dr. Henry was the current Senior Lecturer in Environmental Science at the University of Washington, Bothell campus. He has extensive international experience, most recently serving as the faculty lead on the student program of designing and building sustainable systems in rural Costa Rica, as well as delivering an address as a featured speaker at the Centro de Investigacion Minera y Metallurgica in Chile. Dr. Henry spearheaded the Eastside Prep Impact Center for Sustainability and teaches Environmental Science in the Middle and Upper School. He also coaches our cross country and track teams.

Elin Kuffner, MIT

Middle School Biology
Elin Kuffner joined Eastside Prep at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year. Before teaching at EPS, she taught for two years at the Northwest School. During her post-graduate studies, Elin taught Biology, Earth Science, and Spanish at Lakeside School. In addition to teaching Science and Spanish at EPS, you can find her on the Ultimate Frisbee field coaching the Middle School team.

"I have the opportunity to work with the students in a variety of settings: in the science lab, in the Spanish classroom, on the Ultimate field, in the woods at a camp, on a high ropes course, on a beach by a lake, around a campfire, on a climbing wall, on a sailboat in the San Juan Islands, and in the cloud forests and tide-pools of Costa Rica. Because of these opportunities, I get to know the kids not only as pupils in a classroom, but as whole people."

Upper School Spanish
Cascade Lineback joined EPS in 2008. She majored in Spanish at Northern Arizona University, studied abroad in Spain and Costa Rica and then graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors. Cascade taught English as a foreign language in Spain for two years, where she travelled extensively. While earning her Master’s, she taught beginning and intermediate Spanish courses at the University of Washington. She enjoys integrating culture and literature into the Spanish language classroom.

Allison Luhrs joined the Eastside Prep faculty in the 2007-2008 school year. Prior to pursuing her career in teaching, she worked in editorial and marketing departments within the children’s book publishing industry.

Jessica Minier Mabe, MA
Upper School English
Jessica Minier Mabe joined Eastside Prep in the 2006-2007 academic year. Prior to EPS, she taught English at Everett Community College and at Everett High School. Jessica is an aspiring novelist as well, and has completed and marketed several screenplays. She also taught Native American Literature at the Crescent Arts Centre in Belfast, Ireland.

Laura McGough, MA
Middle School and Upper School Choral Music
Laura McGough joined the Eastside Prep faculty in 2007. Her conducting experience includes teaching children and youth choirs for the Oregon Festival Choirs and the Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus. She directed the Women’s Chorus at Westmont College in California and recently was the musical director for the Westmont youth summer camp production of H.M.S. Pinafore. Returning to her hometown of Seattle, she is pleased to be working as a choral director with EPS and the eastside children's choir, Columbia Choirs.

Karen Mills has been at Eastside Prep since its early days as both the school's main administrative support and librarian. Always willing to do whatever it takes, she assumed the role of Director of Admissions for the 2005-2006 school year, and then returned to her role as librarian the next fall.

Jack Nolan has been teaching in the Seattle area for 20 years. Jack has taught all levels K-12, most recently working as a computer specialist in the Seattle School District.

Elena Olsen, PhD
Upper School English
Elena Olsen teaches Upper School English, co-coaches Middle School cross-country, and helps publish Eastside Prep’s literary and arts magazine, Unreal. Elena joined the faculty of Eastside Prep in 2006 after nine years at the University of Washington—seven years earning her Ph.D. in English, and two years teaching courses in Shakespeare, Milton, eighteenth-century literature, and contemporary poetry.

Kirsten "KP" Pikecomes to us from Boston, MA, where she taught Upper School English classes and coached soccer and crew at Noble and Greenough School for four years. After completing her Bachelor’s Degree in 2000, Kirsten wrote grants for the Yellowstone Park Foundation in Montana before serving in the Peace Corps as a Rural Health Education volunteer in the Ivory Coast. She teaches History and English classes at Eastside Prep as well as helps coach the crew team.

Adam Waltzer, MAT

Adam Waltzerjoined the faculty of Eastside Prep in 2006. A Bronze Medalist in the 1992 World Ultimate Frisbee Championships, Adam coaches the Ultimate Frisbee team. Adam has established himself as a science educator through thirteen years of teaching at Mercer Island High School, Whitman Middle School, and the Berlitz School in Ashiya, Japan.
